Two newly graduated Neonatal Nurse Practitioners were honored at a special celebration on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at Sparrow’s Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Congratulations to NNP graduates Jen Domagalski and Laura Sykes.
The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) is a Registered Nurse prepared at the master’s degree level as a Nurse Practitioner whose focus is the care and management of critically ill and convalescent premature and full-term infants.
“I’ve always wanted to advance my knowledge in neonatal care,” said Domagalski, who has worked at Sparrow for five years, the last four in the RNICU. “Here at Sparrow there is such a great team atmosphere. This was a way to be a part of the team even more.”
Sykes echoed that same sentiment of empowerment and dedication.
“I felt I was ready to contribute to the unit I love in a new way,” said Sykes, who has worked for 13 years in Sparrow’s RNICU.
The NNP works collaboratively with a Neonatologist and other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive care to ill premature and full-term infants and their families.
NNPs work in a variety of acute and non-acute settings, delivering care and management of infants in areas such as neuromuscular problems, fluid and nutritional requirements, drug addiction, respiratory distress, cardiac defects, metabolic conditions and renal problems.
Sparrow’s RNICU cares for nearly 600 acutely ill infants from across the mid-Michigan region each year. The RNICU team provides each infant with care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Sparrow's RNICU offers multiple treatment options and specialized equipment designed to support each infant's developmental needs.
