Sparrow joint replacement, pulmonary care, stroke care honored for excellence

Published: Tuesday, March 2, 2021

LANSING, MI – Sparrow has received national recognition for joint replacement, pulmonary care, and stroke care in the 2021 Specialty Excellence Awards sponsored by Healthgrades.

Sparrow was named among America’s best 100 hospitals in joint replacement and was recognized for excellence in pulmonary care and stroke care. Healthgrades awards tell you which hospitals deliver superior quality care based on an evaluation of hospital performance and quality measures, such as clinical outcomes, patient safety, and patient experience. Healthgrades evaluates more than 45 million Medicare medical claims records for the most recent three-year period for nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide.

“Orthopedic surgery is a rapidly changing profession.  We are evolving with changes in healthcare.  These changes are leading to advanced recovery and improved outcomes for our patients.  We are offering our patients every technology that will rapidly advance discharge and restore function.  It is an exciting time for orthopedics,” said Sparrow Orthopedic Surgeon Jason Cochran, D.O.

The awards note that Sparrow achieved superior clinical outcomes in knee and hip replacement, in treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pneumonia, and in the care and treatment of stroke.

Sparrow pulmonary care leaders say physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, discharge planners and nurses at Sparrow Hospital worked collaboratively together to provide quality care for those patients with COPD. Following evidence-based best practice medicine was the firm foundation for this success.

“We established comprehensive pulmonary care that followed these patients from the emergency room all the way through to outpatient services.”

Regarding the stroke care award, Anmar Razak, M.D., Sparrow Stroke Center Medical Director, said, “Stroke is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity. Multiple advances have recently been made in the way we treat strokes, including minimally invasive surgical treatments to extract clots and restore blood flow. Sparrow Hospital remains at the leading edge of such treatment advances as one of Michigan’s first, and Mid-Michigan’s only, fully certified comprehensive stroke centers.”

Healthgrades is a leading online resource for health information. The award highlights outstanding healthcare facilities and systems. The hospitals recognized nationwide showed lower rates of hospital complications, preventable infections or other deadly medical errors.
