Sparrow Sports Medicine Practice reports seeing large number of sports concussion cases in 2016

LANSING, MI – As the nation readies for tonight’s football national title game tonight between Alabama and Clemson, the Sparrow Sports Medicine Practice reports seeing more than 150 new sports concussion cases in its first full year of operation in 2016. The practice, the only in the mid-Michigan region to provide sports concussion care and acute injury treatment, saw 151 new concussion cases during the year. That covers every age group, from prep athletes hurt playing football and other sports to college students playing intramural sports and older weekend warriors. Practice leaders say they have seen a particular increase in concussions among young athletes, principally in the 9-13 year old range. “This is a great community service that Sparrow provides,” said Michael Shingles, D.O., Medical Director, Sparrow Sports Medicine. “The clinic has provided access to athletes to get the concussion evaluation and treatments that they need.” Sparrow, in collaboration with MSU Sports Medicine, opened the practice in late 2015. The partnership between Sparrow and MSU means the most specialized experts in the region are transforming care for athletes of all ages. An important component of treating the concussion cases at Sparrow are the athletic trainers who are first on the scene at prep sporting events to evaluate student athletes and determine if they have a concussion and the physical therapy provided at Sparrow clinics throughout the region. Sparrow Sports Medicine is located at the Sparrow Health Science Pavilion, 2900 Hannah Boulevard, Suite B-102, East Lansing.
