LANSING, MI – Sparrow Hospital is among the statewide healthcare leaders in tissue and organ tissue donations, according to new figures from Gift of Life Michigan.

Sparrow ranked fourth in 2016 in both tissue and organ donations, with 31 and 14 cases, respectively. Gift of Life saw a statewide record with 1,235 tissue donors last year.

“Sparrow Hospital is clearly a statewide leader in both organ and tissue donations,” said Dorrie Dils, CEO of Gift of Life Michigan. “It has succeeded in helping fulfill the wishes of generous donors and their families year after year because a culture of donation thrives at Sparrow.

“The clinical staff knows that, at the end of life, they can help turn one family’s tragedy into hope and new life for other families.”

Sparrow has worked closely with Gift of Life to support donors and their families. Gift of Life officials said Sparrow’s critical care units have embraced the donation philosophy in recent years. Sparrow’s success may also stem in part from the hospital being the regional trauma center for mid-Michigan.

Supporting the donation of organs and tissues reflects Sparrow’s compassionate care and our mission to improve the health of the people in our communities.

One organ donor can save the lives of up to eight people and tissue donors can improve life for as many as 75. To join the Michigan Organ Donor registry and get the red heart emblem on your driver’s license or state ID, go to giftoflifemichigan.org/go/sparrow.
