Transforming care, new approach to hip replacement surgery

Published: Sept. 21, 2015

Orthopedic Surgeon Jason Cochran, D.O., at Sparrow, now provides an alternative to traditional hip replacement surgery, featuring a smaller incision and quicker recovery time.

Cochran is among the few Physicians in Michigan – and among the first in the mid-Michigan region - performing direct anterior approach hip replacement. The procedure allows surgeons to make a smaller incision on the front of the hip and move aside muscle rather than cut through it, to place the prosthesis. With other approaches, surgeons must cut through the muscle to reach the hip joint, resulting in a much longer recovery process.

Dr. Cochran will discuss anterior hip surgery on Wednesday, Sept. 23, during Sparrow’s Lunch with a Doctor speaker series. It begins at 11 a.m. at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center, Lincoln Room, 219 S. Harrison Road, East Lansing.

“This approach may lead to earlier recovery without the need for precautions seen after traditional hip replacement,” said Dr. Cochran.
