LANSING, MI – Noted local OB/GYN LaKeeya Tucker, D.O., has begun a two-year term as Chief of Medical Staff at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.

Dr. Tucker is Sparrow’s first African-American Chief of Staff and will represent and communicate the views of medical staff members while working with Sparrow leadership to ensure quality, compassionate care for all patients. Dr. Tucker is an outstanding OB/GYN who has practiced at Alliance Obstetrics & Gynecology in East Lansing for 19 years and served as Sparrow Hospital’s Chief of Staff-Elect for two years.

“It is with great pride and honor that I serve in this role,” Dr. Tucker said. “It is my plan to represent my peers and Sparrow Hospital to the best of my ability. I remain grateful to those leaders who have blazed the trail for me. My mindset brings Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm to the forefront. She said, ‘You don't make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering, and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas.’ Her landmark position as the first Black woman to serve in the U.S. Congress parallels my election to this position.”

"The position has great responsibility, and in electing Dr. Tucker to the position, the medical staff members are demonstrating their deep respect and trust for her integrity, leadership, and medical intellect.   She is distinctly deserving of that respect and trust, and we are incredibly fortunate that she is willing to serve.”

Dr. Tucker takes over for past Chief of Medical Staff Robin DeMuth, M.D. Sparrow sincerely thanks Dr. DeMuth for her leadership and service to our medical staff. We are grateful for her guidance during the past two years of COVID in healthcare.

Michael Kent McLeod, M.D., MBA, FACS, FACE, has been elected to serve as Chief of Staff-Elect during Dr. Tucker’s term. Dr. McLeod joined the medical staff at Sparrow Hospital in 2009 when he came to Lansing to revive the general surgery residency program.

Dr. McLeod is the Medical Director of Surgical Quality and Vice Chair of Surgery at E.W. Sparrow Hospital, and Chair of the Quality and Patient Safety Committee - MSU Health Care. He has dedicated his professional non-surgical time to teaching surgical residents and medical students and participating in numerous task forces and committees. He will succeed Dr. Tucker when her term as Chief of Staff ends in two years
