The July 27 "Tee Off for Tom" golf tournament honors the legacy of a Charlotte resident and the Sparrow Caregivers who treated him as he battled cancer.
The third annual golf scramble will be held at Centennial Acres Golf Course in Sunfield, Michigan. Proceeds go to the Sparrow Foundation and will directly benefit Sparrow's Medical Oncology Unit, where the late Tom Auvenshine was treated.
"These Caregivers provide so much," said Auvenshine's son, Adam. "We want them to have all the tools they need to care for Patients with cancer."
Tom Auvenshine, an area farmer and UPS employee, was a special person to many in the mid-Michigan region, including the Sparrow staff who cared for him for three months.
His family began the golf tournament in 2011 as a way to give back to Sparrow and other families contending with cancer.
"It is such an ordeal for families," Adam Auvenshine said. "If we can make it better in some way, that's our goal."
Besides great golf, this year's "Tee Off for Tom" includes a dunk tank, a mini-putting tournament and food and refreshments throughout the day.
