Two Sparrow Health System hospital laboratories recently have been reaccredited by the national College of American Pathologists.
CAP accreditation is designed to ensure the highest standard of care.
The Sparrow Hospital Laboratory and The Sparrow Hospital at St. Lawrence Laboratory received the two-year national accreditation following an extensive process in which the laboratories answered more than 1,000 questions and hosted a CAP team for multi-day on-site inspections.
The Sparrow Hospital lab director is James E. Richard, D.O. The head of the Sparrow at St. Lawrence lab is Edwin B. Marinas, M.D.
During the CAP accreditation process, peer inspectors from other CAP-accredited facilities examined the laboratory’s records and quality control for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examined the laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management.
The labs, which have a combined 300 Caregivers, also conduct their own off-year inspections, said Sandra Wilcoxson, HT (ASCP), Sparrow Laboratory Accreditation Specialist.
There are more than 7,700 facilities nationwide accredited by CAP, a leading national organization with more than 18,000 board-certified pathologists.
