Volunteer of the Month for January 2018

Published: Jan. 2, 2018

The Sparrow Women’s Board of Managers and Sparrow Volunteer Services Department have named Jeanne Carter of Lansing the January Volunteer of the Month. Carter began volunteering at the Sparrow Main Campus and now has volunteered at the St. Lawrence Information and Escort desk for 9 years. She says she enjoys helping the patients and their families as they walk in the door and likes helping other volunteers as they work with her, especially now that the Mercy League Outpatient Surgical Lounge folks have merged with Escorts after the renovation of the entire area. They all work together to help patients have a positive experience.
Carter is said to be reliable, organized, friendly and helpful. She attends scheduled meetings and fills in when other volunteers have to cancel. She is also willing to take on extra shifts if necessary.

Carter has been married to Tolbert for 46 years and he also volunteers for Sparrow making popcorn. They have a son Todd who lives in Chicago and a daughter Lisa, who lives in Haslett and has two children. In her spare time, Carter reads a lot of books and she and her husband have traveled with the grandchildren to Europe, including Italy, England and France. They also have traveled to Alaska and in the U.S. West.

Carter grew up in Toledo, Ohio and attends her annual University of Dayton reunions. She has a degree in education and taught 15 years at Lansing Community College as well as a part time professor at Oakland University.

While she was still teaching at L.C.C., her husband retired and she was looking for something for him to do. Consequently, he started volunteering at Sparrow and she decided it was something she wanted to do also.

The Sparrow Women’s Board takes great pride in honoring volunteers like Jeanne Carter who share their time and talent for the benefit of Sparrow’s patients and families. To learn more about volunteering at Sparrow, please visit Sparrow.org or call our office at 517.364.3606, Option 1.
