Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, or TAVR, is a new treatment that gives renewed life to Patients with severe aortic stenosis who are unable to tolerate heart bypass.
During this procedure, a catheter is used to deliver a replacement prosthetic valve to your heart through an artery. Once in place, the catheter balloon is inflated, opening the new valve and securing it in place.
Raymond Hansen, 90, of Williamston, was one of the first to undergo the procedure at Sparrow. Before the surgery, Hansen was weak, had great difficulty breathing, and could only take a few steps. Recently he shared with us his experience and what it has meant for his outlook on life.
