Zonta Clubs donate comfort pillows for Patients at Sparrow

More than a dozen members of the Lansing, East Lansing, and Michigan Capitol Area Zonta Clubs gathered at the Sparrow Cancer Center today to present nearly 300 handmade comfort pillows. Used mainly by recovering mastectomy Patients, the pillows are used to guard and protect the Patient’s surgery site when coughing, riding in a car, and similar potentially painful situations.

The heart-shaped pillows are covered with a soothing flannel or fleece and include a pocket for post-surgical equipment and an adjustable strap to put around the neck or shoulder to secure the pillow in place.

James Herman, M.D., Medical Director of the Sparrow Cancer Center, accepted the donation from Kim McCall, President of the Lansing Zonta Club.

“The Patients absolutely love the pillows. They are always touched and amazed that someone has taken time in this way to help comfort and support them through a difficult time of their journey,” says James Herman, M.D., Sparrow Cancer Center Medical Director.

Some of the donated pillows will also be used by the Sparrow Heart and Vascular Center to help Patients recovering from open-heart surgery who face similar post-surgical needs.

“Zonta Club is a hands-on group that works with area organizations to help women of all ages in many areas of need. If a small contribution of the comfort pillows from our two clubs helps mastectomy and heart Patients, it is our pleasure to help make life just a little easier for them," says Kim McCall, Zonta Club of Lansing President.

All three Zonta Clubs are members of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization of executives, professionals and people of decision-making experience who work to advance and empower the status of women and girls through service and advocacy. The Lansing Club was founded in 1922, East Lansing Club in 1979, and the Michigan Capitol Area Club in 1984.
