About Me

Brendan Coutu, M.D., M.B.A. joined the Sparrow Herbert-Herman Cancer Center team in July 2022. He completed his undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University, receiving a B.S. in biochemistry with a focus on mass spectrometric analysis of proteomics and lipidomics of malignant cells. He then went on to complete medical school at the University of Minnesota and his intern year in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Coutu's Radiation Oncology residency was at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where he was selected as the Chief Resident during his final year of residency. He has a master's degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska, with a focus on finance in the healthcare system. Dr. Coutu has a special interest in stereotactic body radiotherapy using the MRIDIAN ViewRay linear accelerator, for which he was excited to join the team at Sparrow. He has been published on the role of radiotherapy in the management of lung cancer, head and neck cancer, prostate cancer, CNS malignancies, and lymphoma. He has received numerous research awards, including the best of American Society of Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), best of American Head and Neck Society (AHNS), and the Silverman Award. He is a member of ASTRO and the American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO). While research and technology drew him to radiation oncology, his favorite part of his position is spending time with patients and their families.
