Partnering for families in mid-Michigan with UM Health-Sparrow Health System

UM Health-Sparrow is now connected with the nationally ranked Michigan Medicine C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, with a deliberate focus on keeping patient care close to home for families in the mid-Michigan region. The relationship is designed to strengthen existing clinical services and create additional pediatric specialty service availability within the communities that UM Health-Sparrow serves.

In addition, our collaboration will significantly enhance the patient experience and lead to more coordinated care for pediatric patients from around the region.

What is this joint venture?

Michigan Medicine has become a formal partner with UM Health-Sparrow Children’s Center in the delivery of pediatric specialty care for patients and families in the mid-Michigan region.

Both organizations look forward to continuing to strengthen and broaden access to pediatric specialty care throughout the communities UM Health-Sparrow serves.

What C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital specialty services are available through UM Health-Sparrow Health System?

The following C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital specialty services available at UM Health-Sparrow include:

UM Health-Sparrow Children’s Center also offers pediatric endocrinology and nephrology outpatient clinics, as well as pediatric inpatient care including a general care unit, Level III NICU, pediatric ICU, and inpatient oncology services.

Efforts are underway to ensure that patient care across all of these clinics will be integrated to ensure coordinated care and an enhanced patient experience across all services offered.

Are more services now available through UM Health-Sparrow Children’s Center?

Initially, our focus is on integrating care to best serve our patients, and with a focus on keeping care local. Over time, both organizations look forward to continuing to strengthen and broaden access to pediatric specialty care locally in the communities UM Health-Sparrow serves.

Is my family able to receive all of our care in Lansing or will we need to travel to Ann Arbor?

Both organizations are committed to providing the right care, at the right time, in the right place. Our goal is to give families access to extraordinary specialty care, close to home through UM Health-Sparrow Children’s Center in Lansing whenever possible. Together, we are working to improve access to specialty care so families have less need to travel, not more.

Will my current UM Health-Sparrow pediatric providers change?

There are no changes to the existing UM Health-Sparrow medical staff planned related to the new joint venture. In the future, the goal is to make additional U-M pediatric specialty care options available locally in Lansing.

Does the joint venture impact my insurance coverage?

The new affiliation does not impact UM Health-Sparrow Health System’s relationships with insurers. UM Health-Sparrow Health System will continue to contract with payers on behalf of the pediatric specialty clinics offered through the joint venture.  If you have questions about your coverage, visit UM Health-Sparrow.org/insurance or contact your insurer.

Will I receive a bill from UM Health-Sparrow or C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital?

Services provided through UM Health-Sparrow Children’s Center will be billed for by UM Health-Sparrow Health System.  Services provided by the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital pediatric cardiology clinic in the Professional Building will be billed by Michigan Medicine.

How will Michigan Medicine and UM Health-Sparrow share electronic medical records and documentation? Which patient portal should I use?

Any care you receive through providers at UM Health-Sparrow Children’s Center, whether they be inpatient or clinic services provided by UM Health-Sparrow employees, MSU faculty or U-M C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital physicians, will be managed through UM Health-Sparrow’s electronic medical records system. UM Health-Sparrow’s Electronic Medical Record system (UM Health-Sparrow Epic) will be used for inpatient care, while several systems will be utilized in ambulatory settings. Patients and families can visit mychart.UM Health-Sparrow.org to log in or set up your account.

Michigan Medicine providers can access medical records for patients whose care they are involved in through the provider portal.

As a donor to UM Health-Sparrow Children’s Center, will my donation stay in Lansing?

Yes. UM Health-Sparrow remains an independent hospital with a focus on providing care for patients in the mid-Michigan region. Michigan Medicine’s goal in collaborating with UM Health-Sparrow is to expand access to advanced specialty care in these communities. Philanthropic support to UM Health-Sparrow Health System and the UM Health-Sparrow Children’s Center will continue to be invested in providing the highest quality, compassionate health care to children and families in the mid-Michigan region.
