Bone Density Testing
Osteoporosis is a progressive and degenerative disease that results in increased risk of fracture to the spine, hip, wrist, arm, and leg. Such fractures are especially serious among senior citizens. Early detection and treatment are essential.
A bone density test can help tell if someone has osteoporosis (loss of bone density) or is at risk of it. Sparrow offers bone density testing, using a state-of-the-art scanner to determine the density of bones in the hip and spine. This allows radiologists to examine bone health and identify sites of osteoporosis.
Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States. Many die suddenly without any symptoms. Sparrow’s state-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities make it possible to detect heart disease early enough to address it effectively through medication and lifestyle changes. Our range of services include cardiac catheterization, stress testing and monitoring.
Should surgery be required, Sparrow has board-certified cardiologists and cardiac surgeons. Our open-heart surgery team – from doctors to nurses to dieticians, respiratory therapists and lab technicians -- is compassionate and well trained.

Robotic Gynecological Surgery
Sparrow is a leader in the use of advanced robotic surgery for hysterectomies and other gynecological issues. Robotic-assisted surgery offers a broad, new range of treatment options for common problems affecting women. Sparrow boasts two DaVinci robotic surgical systems in its state-of-art operating rooms in the Sparrow tower, allowing expanded treatment for a greater number of patients.
Because robotic-assisted gynecological surgeries at Sparrow are minimally invasive, patients are given options they wouldn’t have with traditional open surgery. The benefits include less scarring (incisions the size of a quarter), a shorter hospital stay, and dramatically decreased recovery time – women who undergo a robotic-assisted hysterectomy typically return to their daily activities in 14-20 days, rather than the typical six weeks required for open surgery.
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program (SANE)
A sexual assault nurse examiner is a registered nurse specially trained to provide care to sexual assault patients. The sexual assault nurse examiner conducts medical forensic examinations and can serve as an expert witness.
The goal of the sexual assault nurse examiner program is to provide free, coordinated, timely, comprehensive and compassionate care to pediatric and adult victims of sexual assault 24 hours a day. SANE program nurses work collaboratively with police, prosecutors, child protective services and community advocacy services to provide the best and most appropriate care.
If you are in need of an exam you can go to the Sparrow Emergency Department and the nurse at the desk will page the appropriate nurse on call. If you have any other questions, please call 517.364.3931.
Clinical trials give patients something we really believe in – a new avenue of hope. With Sparrow's extensive clinical trials program, our patients have access to voluntary, specialized studies, which can greatly improve outcomes and may lead to better treatments for cancer patients everywhere.
All of our physicians are actively involved in bringing the latest in clinical trials to their patients, and as a member of the Michigan Cancer Research Consortium, Sparrow is a state leader in clinical trials. Through this consortium, Sparrow Cancer Center has access to the innovative work of major cancer centers nationwide. Learn more about clinical trials at Sparrow on our Cancer Center page.
