Jernein Service of Lansing named January Volunteer of the Month

Published: Jan. 18, 2016

The Sparrow Women’s Board of Managers and the Volunteer services Department honors Jernein Service of Lansing as the January Volunteer of the Month.

Service began volunteering at the Sparrow Hospital St. Lawrence campus 27 years ago in the Angelus League following in her mother-in-law’s footsteps. Service went on to lead the league. She now serves at the Sparrow Hospital St. Lawrence campus in the Mercy League caring for Patients and their families coming into the outpatient surgical lounge. Service covers many of the shifts that are short of a Volunteer, especially the 6-9 a.m. one.

Service also volunteers for The Salvation Army, cooking and counting the money in the bell ringers’ collection pots. She belongs to Williamston Free Methodist Church where she also volunteers.

Service grew up in Lansing and attended Walter French and Sexton schools. She worked for Waverly Schools for 26 years.

Her husband of 62 years, Lloyd, gave her the perfect last name, Service. They have three sons, three daughters, 17 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Her hobbies include adult coloring books and reading. She and her husband used to run a fishing charter in Manistee, which one of their sons has since taken over.

The Women’s Board of Managers takes great honor in celebrating the gifts of Volunteers like Service who give of their time and talent for the benefit of our Patients. To learn more about Volunteer opportunities at Sparrow, visit Sparrow.org or call 517.364.3606, option one.
