The renovation and expansion of the Mary Free Bed at Sparrow rehabilitation unit is now fully complete, as leaders unveiled 40 private Patient rooms and two state-of-the-art therapy gyms at an open house on Monday, Nov. 9.

Mary Free Bed at Sparrow is a joint venture between Sparrow Hospital and Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital of Grand Rapids. The project expands the inpatient rehabilitation unit and made it possible for all adult inpatient rehabilitation services to be conveniently located on the same hospital floor.

“We have been transforming care for Patients since June when we completed the first phase of Mary Free Bed at Sparrow,” said Kris Tennant, Director of Mary Free Bed at Sparrow. “We are beyond excited to have fully finished the unit. We are committed to restoring hope and freedom for the people of mid-Michigan.”

The unit provides intensive neurological, orthopedic, and stroke rehabilitation care.

In addition to a full-size Chevrolet Traverse donated by General Motors, Mary Free Bed at Sparrow features a mock Capital Area Transportation Authority (CATA) bus. Both the car and the bus are essential for Patients to practice getting in and out of a vehicle, loading groceries and assistive devices, accessing public transportation, learning what needs to be done to secure a wheelchair in place, and more.

The Traverse is located in the Accident Fund Holdings therapy gym, named to honor one of our very generous partners in the mid-Michigan region.

“Accident Fund is proud to support the efforts of Mary Free Bed at Sparrow as we celebrate the opening of this incredible inpatient rehabilitation unit,” said Lisa Corless, Chief Administration Officer, Accident Fund Holdings, and member of the Sparrow Foundation Board. “It’s exciting to see this new rehabilitation gym that will help bring positive Patient outcomes through best practice physical, recreational and occupational therapy as well as speech pathology.”
