Norman Beck named Sparrow February Volunteer of the Month

Published: Feb. 18, 2016

The Sparrow Women's Board of Managers and Sparrow Volunteer Services Department honors Norman Beck as the February Volunteer of the Month.

Beck has volunteered for over three years at the Escort and Information Desk at Sparrow Hospital at the St. Lawrence Campus.

Beck grew up in Fremont, Ohio and graduated with a B.S in Commercial Science (Business) from Tiffin University. He was employed with the “Olds” plant (now GM) for 34 years and also taught shorthand at Lansing Community College for more than 19 years. After the death of his wife nine years ago he realized he needed to get out and be around other people and help others.

Beck also volunteers on local elections and at the Ingham County Fair. He's known to be a joy to talk to with a great sense of humor and a smile always on his face. He fills in on others' shifts whenever he is needed no matter the weather.

Beck has two children including a special needs daughter who lives with him and a daughter who is a Patient Care Tech in Sparrow's Hospice. He enjoys watching the birds and squirrels in his yard.

Beck is a great example of the kind of Volunteer that can ease the anxiety of Patients coming in the door for outpatient surgery or tests. His welcoming smile and help with directions can be a calming presence. He says he gives thanks to God for his health and ability to help others.

The Sparrow Women's Board of managers takes great honor in celebrating the gifts of hospitality in Volunteers like Norman Beck who give of their time and talent for the benefit of our Patients.
