Dennis A. Swan, President and CEO of Sparrow Health System, recently received the "Alumni Achievement Award" from the Department of Political Science in the College of Arts and Sciences at Western Michigan University.

"He very much reflects the attributes of our best graduates from Western Michigan and we're proud of his success," said John A. Clark, Professor and Chair of the Department of Political Science.

Mr. Swan was recently given the honor at a ceremony on Western Michigan University's Kalamazoo campus.

Mr. Swan has served as president and CEO of Sparrow since November 2004. He received his juris doctorate from Thomas M. Cooley Law School and his bachelor of arts from Western Michigan University.

Mr. Swan has served in various executive-level positions within Sparrow since 1981. He serves on numerous boards, such as the Michigan Hospital Association, the American Hospital Association Regional Policy Board, Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Capital Area United Way, Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP). He also is a Fellow with the American College of Healthcare Executives.

"Dennis is a great example of what one can do with a degree in political science," Clark said. "This gave us a chance to not only honor distinguished alumni, but also to send students a signal there are many things you can do with a degree in political science."
