Breast Clinic receives national honor, new Nurse Navigator

Published: March 15, 2012

The Sparrow Breast Clinic has created a new Breast Nurse Navigator position to act as a point person for Patients through the diagnosis and treatment process.

As a cancer survivor herself, Sharon Cosgrove, RN, is uniquely qualified to act as a compassionate advocate for breast Patients.

Cosgrove helps communicate with Patients about the results of their mammograms and remains their advocate through their care at Sparrow.

In addition to the new Breast Nurse Navigator, the Sparrow Breast Clinic has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.

The designation recognizes breast imaging centers that have achieved a high level of quality and earned accreditation in the ACR's voluntary breast imaging programs. The ACR, based in Reston, Va., conducted peer-review evaluations to determine Sparrow has achieved high practice standards in a variety of breast programs.

Sparrow's breast imaging services - part of the Sparrow Cancer Center -- are fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasoundguided breast biopsy.

"We are thrilled by the ACR designation and the creation of our new Breast Nurse Navigator position," said Joy Szilagyi, Sparrow's Director of Radiology and Diagnostic Services. "We are committed to multi-disciplinary care of our Patients and providing a strong support system while meeting the highest national standards."
