LANSING, Mich. - Longtime Sparrow internal medicine specialist Alan Neiberg, MD, has been selected as 2010 Sparrow Physician of the Year.
Dr. Neiberg, 67, received the honor at the annual Sparrow Physician Recognition Dinner Apr. 24, at the Country Club of Lansing. In addition to Dr. Neiberg's honor, four esteemed physicians, Errikos Constant, MD, Alena Fabian, MD, Raymond Hansen, MD, and John Penner, MD, were inducted into the Sparrow Physicians Hall of Fame.
"Alan's unique contribution to Sparrow has been his complete and unconditional willingness to accept any and all patients who need care," said former Sparrow Chief of the Medical Staff and current Sparrow Board of Directors member Donald Kuiper, MD. "He has never denied anyone, and cared for every type of patient - emergency admissions, transfer patients, post-op patients, critical care patients as well as the most difficult neurosurgical patients."
Dr. Neiberg first entered the health care profession as a research psychologist, earning his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Cincinnati. After completing his degree in medicine at Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine, he completed post graduate studies at Yale-New Haven Hospital in nephrology, gastroenterology and medical oncology. He joined Sparrow's Medical Staff in 1976 and was the one of the first area physicians to specialize in the care of critically ill and injured patients.
"Alan is truly a well-rounded general internist, a vanishing breed in today's medical world," Dr. Kuiper said. "His willingness to care for anyone, and his skill and ability to take on any challenge has helped Sparrow fulfill its mission as a regional referral center for patients in Mid-Michigan.
