Sparrow has joined mid-Michigan government and community leaders in a partnership aimed at improving energy efficiency and health and safety for low to moderate-income Lansing residents.
Sparrow President and CEO Dennis Swan signed the Green & Healthy Homes Initiative Lansing Compact earlier this month, joining such organizations as the Michigan Department of Community Health, Michigan State University and the city of Lansing through Mayor Virg Bernero.
The Green & Healthy Homes Initiative (GHHI) is a national nonprofit dedicated to breaking the link between unhealthy housing and unhealthy residents. With support from several federal agencies, GHHI serves as the national model for green and healthy homes interventions. Lansing is the 18th GHHI site and third location in Michigan.
Sparrow plans to be an active participant in the program, helping identify possible applicants based on health issues.
Resources available include free home inspections and the installation of products to reduce asthma triggers, lead exposure, safety risks, and energy use. The pilot program will include 10 homes in Lansing.
Participants must meet income requirements, live in a home built in 1978 or earlier, and be up to date on taxes or in good standing on a payment plan. The program is open to homeowners, landlords and renters.
