Free Celiac Disease screenings at Lansing Gluten Free Fair

Published: Oct. 6, 2015

As part of its mission to improve the health of the people in the mid-Michigan region, Sparrow is offering free Celiac Disease screenings at the Lansing Gluten Free Fair on Saturday, Oct. 10.

Celiac Disease is a genetic autoimmune disease where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine. It affects nearly 100,000 people in Michigan alone. Research shows roughly 70 percent are undiagnosed.

The screening consists of a standard blood draw. Those wishing to be screened should be on a gluten-containing diet. Test results will not be accurate if you are already on a gluten-free diet.

Marge Pestka, a Sparrow Registered Dietitian, is this year’s guest speaker at the Gluten Free Fair. She will explain how to choose foods for relief from gastrointestinal discomfort.

The Lansing Gluten Free Fair runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ramada Inn, 7501 W. Saginaw Highway, Lansing. Experts will be on hand to answer questions about the gluten-free lifestyle. Vendors from around the country will be there with gluten-free food to sample and for sale. There is a $5 admission fee to attend the expo area. There is no entry fee for the free Celiac Disease screenings.

Choose Wisely. Choose Sparrow.
