Cardiovascular Surgery

Keeping your heart healthy is one of the most important things you can do. Heart care often begins with your primary care physician who may refer you to a cardiologist. If your cardiologist decides you need surgery, they will refer you to a cardiovascular surgeon here at UM Health-Sparrow. The surgeon joins your heart team to ensure you receive the treatment you need. 

Cardiovascular surgeons perform many different types of operations, including heart valve repair and replacement, heart defect repair, coronary artery bypass and aneurysm repair. They also perform operations on the blood vessels (the body’s main blood supplier), including the aorta. This is often called vascular surgery.
